The Q:
I want to learn as much as possible but don't want to seem like
a teacher's pet...how can I ask questions in class that I know no
one will understand and still learn what I think is important?
The A: If
you're truly certain nobody else in the class could benefit by hearing
the answers to the questions you want to ask, hold your tongue and
flag the prof down before or after class. Or, better yet, make an
appointment during your prof's office hours so you can talk with
him or her about everything that interests you. This way you'll
not only get the answers to all of your questions, but you'll get
one-on-one attention, you'll get to know the professor personally
(which might provide good connections in the future) and you won't
feel guilty for taking up precious class time. E-mail's always an
alternative if the professor's really busy or hard to reach, but
personal face-to-face attention is the best kind you can get.
